9. DO NOT MAKE EXCUSES What is the lesson? Do not make excuses. Period. Excuses are one of the most common obstacles when people decide not to take action. There is always a "good reason" for their lack of judgment, or being in an unwanted situation. Rarely do they feel it has anything to do with them; it is always someone else. The bottom line is that in order to make career decisions and professional decisions, you have to get past the excuses and act. Sometimes acting is the most difficult part but it is the most important part. You can spend a lot of time planning and making more plans and then revising those plans but until you act, it will be nearly impossible to advance in your career or professionally. The excuses you make will not help in furthering your career. Good Experience Early in my career I decided I wanted to work in Europe to better understand the global markets so, I took a trip to Europe to see if I would like it. While I was there, I was fortunate enough to visit the Paris office of the company I was working for and in that short period of time I was hooked. I knew that I would be back. A few years later I did go back to Europe. It was a very rewarding experience that shaped not just how I thought about the financial markets but, it also demonstrated to me how different cultures conduct business. This experience I still find valuable today. I could have made a million excuses for not going to Europe, (school loans, very attractive career opportunities in the United States and possibly becoming homesick); however, it was more important for me to take this window of opportunity so that I would not have regrets later. By not making any excuses about working in Europe, I fulfilled a dream of learning about the global markets and learning a new language and culture. |
